Saudi Arabia says Yemen rebel fire kills 3 in kingdom

Saudi air defenses on Sunday intercepted a ballistic missile over the southern province of Jazan after being fired from Houthi-held territory in neighboring Yemen, state media said.

Al-Malki accused Yemen's Shia rebels known as Houthis of firing a projectile that was "launched deliberately to target civilians".

Houthi rebels in Yemen have ramped up missile attacks on Saudi Arabia in recent weeks and months.

The coalition said it would retaliate against anyone who threatens the safety of its citizens and residents. Turki Al-Malki said that the ballistic missiles were fired by the Houthi militia.

The Saudi-led coalition, which includes the UAE, intervened in the Yemen war in 2015 at the request of Mr Hadi's government.

The strike coincides with the advance of coalition-backed Yemeni forces on the rebel-held Red Sea port of Hodeida, the main conduit for humanitarian supplies into a country teetering on the brink of starvation. The brigade was also involved in an ambush of the Houthi rebels in southern Hodeidah province in which at least 45 rebels were killed, including a high-ranking officer, spokesman Aseel Al Sakladi told The National.

Almost 10,000 people have been killed since the alliance launched its intervention in Yemen in March 2015, contributing to what the United Nations has called the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
