"By any reckoning we will have a final communique", Merkel told journalists on the final day of the summit in Canada, which has been held amid anger towards the USA for imposing tariffs on allies, circumventing the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the process.

The summit was dubbed "the G6 plus one" due to the billionaire tycoon's isolation over trade and his decision to pull the USA out of the Iran nuclear deal.

Mr Trump shocked America's allies - namely the EU, Mexico and Canada - when he recently announced a 25% tariff on imports of steel and 10% on aluminium from these countries.

Macron also tweeted Saturday a photo of the other leaders and aides surrounding Trump, who was one of just two people sitting.
