Xiaomi's Redmi Y2 takes aim at the millennials

Xiaomi's Redmi Y2 takes aim at the millennials

To recall, the Redmi Y-Series was launched in India with the Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite a year ago; there is no such series in China, Xiaomi's home country.

Beginning with a comment on Delhi's hot weather, Vice President of Xiaomi India Manu Jain introduced a new selfie-focused smartphone called the Redmi Y2.

A Xiaomi smartphone that does not have a notch has been listed with three model numbers.

I'll have much more to share on the Redmi Y2 in the coming weeks, including how it fares against the likes of the Redmi Note 5 and other budget phones.

The Redmi Y2 features a 5.99-inch IPS screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio display.

Optics wise, the handsets rocks dual cameras at the back- a 13MP primary sensor with f/2.2 aperture and PDAF is mated to a 5MP depth sensor for adding bokeh effect to the images. The front camera on the device has a 16MP sensor under a five-element 79.8 degree wide angle lens with an aperture of f/2.0.

The Redmi Y2 comes with a 5.99-inch touchscreen display with an HD+ resolution of 720 pixels by 1440 pixels. This phone is made out of metal, and it sports a rear-facing fingerprint scanner. The 14nm Snapdragon 625 chipset and 3,080mAh battery powers the smartphone. The 32GB variant costs Rs. 9999. The device supports face recognition feature to unlock the phone. It comes in either 3 GB RAM/ 32 GB storage or 4 GB RAM/ 64 GB storage variants. Key highlights of the Redmi Y2 include a vertical dual camera setup at the back, an AI-powered 16-megapixel selfie camera, Face Unlock capabilities, and an 18:9 display. There's a dedicated microSD card slot for storage expansion up to 2TB. The phone will run on Android OS Oreo with the shell MIUI. The device will be exclusively available starting from June 12th from Amazon.in, Mi.com and Mi Home Stores as well. The phone will be sold in Flash sale initially.

The lower spec'd variant of the Redmi Y2, the one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, is priced at 9,999 rupees ($148) while the 4GB + 64GB variant is priced at ₹12,999 ($193).
