Russian Federation supports Iran's membership in SCO: Putin

Russian Federation supports Iran's membership in SCO: Putin

Trump added that he had not spoken to Putin in quite a while, but said he still would rather see Russian Federation included in the group of world leaders, asserting that it would make the group "more meaningful".

Speaking from China where Putin was attending a regional security summit, Peskov said that in their last telephone conversation on March 20 the Russian and United States leaders had also mentioned possibly meeting in Vienna.

President Xi Jinping on Friday awarded China's first friendship medal to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin as the two leaders firmed up their alliance amid mounting USA diplomatic and economic pressure on them.

'As soon as the US side is ready, the meeting will take place, depending, of course, on my working schedule'.

Putin said in a Russian television interview that a meeting with Trump would be "useful".

Nevertheless, Trump told reporters Friday that he has been "Russia's worst nightmare".

The presidents of China, Russia and Mongolia pledged to strengthen trilateral cooperation during their meeting here on Saturday.

The US president has repeatedly said he wants to improve relationships with Moscow.

The country was expelled from what was then called the G8 after it annexed Crimea, but Trump said it should now come back.

"We have massive trade deficits with nearly every country, we will straighten that out", Trump said.

"We will be ready to greet them all in Moscow", he added.

"And he was the one that let Russian Federation go and spend a lot of money on Crimea, because they've spent a lot of money rebuilding it, I guess they have their submarine port there or whatever", Trump continued.

The two leaders then attended an ice hockey between the youth teams of Russian Federation and China.

"Once again, nothing concrete was said", Putin said, referring to the G7 statement. It is a serious issue, this might really hurt the economic interests of many countries, first of all, of course, of the European ones.

Rouhani said the USA was monitoring the global reaction to its withdrawal from the nuclear deal, and a weak response would encourage it to carry on acting unilaterally.

He emphasised that the bloc's members, who also include China, four ex-Soviet Central Asian nations, as well as India and Pakistan, are anxious about the U.S. move.

Now in the wake of the US withdrawal from the pact, "SCO members may use granting full membership to Iran as a way to demonstrate support for (Tehran) and the nuclear agreement", said Dawn Murphy, professor of global security studies at the US Air War College. He added that Moscow will continue to honor its obligations under the Iranian nuclear deal.

"Vladimir Putin chose to make Russian Federation unworthy of membership in the G8 by invading Ukraine and annexing Crimea".

Trump's deteriorating relationships with Trudeau and Macron - both of whom he has previously lavished with praise - come as the USA finds itself increasingly isolated from key allies over Trump's isolationist policies, including his decisions to pull out of the Paris climate agreement and to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.
