Join Relay for Life fight against cancer

The American Cancer Society would like to remind everyone that this year's Relay For Life of Kendall County will be from 3 to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at Go For It Sports Dome, 9231 Galena Road north of Yorkville. "Knowing that I was a cancer survivor, they invited me to join their team and get involved with the planning of the event".

With each step, dozens of people in the city of Utica moved closer to a cure for cancer.

At the relay, teams from churches, local business and personal groups made to support a loved one gathered to raise money in support of those who come face to face with the disease.

Around midnight there is a special 5K planned for kids and participants.

Michelle Hart is no stranger to Relay for Life.

Individuals and teams will take turns walking or running around a path at the park to remember those who lost their lives to cancer and honor survivors. "We felt we needed to do something about it, and we do that by spreading awareness, raising money for cancer research, encouraging people to know the symptoms and get tested regularly". We have many types of survivors with different longevity of surviving, but we want to keep that going. "They can be anywhere from five dollars to thousands of dollars a month, and people need all the support they can get".

This year there will be an opening ceremony to honor cancer survivors and a luminaria ceremony to remember those who have died. It doesn't matter what cancer you've had, or what kind of treatment you've gone through - when you say you're exhausted, another survivor knows that feeling. "I always thought if I stayed calm and just did what the doctor said, everything would work out". "It's an honour to be the face of Relay and I'm happy to help others".

"The love, the prayers, people we didn't even know were backing us".

The Relay For Life in McDonald was the last of the season in Trumbull County. Dash plaques will be given to the first 50 registered vehicles.

On top of supporting a worthy cause, there's another reason participants come back year after year for the Relay For Life. The event is set for June 7-8, 2019, with registration opening Sunday, July 1.

"They just wanted to help".

Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Washington in 1985, the Relay For Life movement is the world's largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer. Relay is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in thousands of communities and 27 countries. "Cancer gave me goal; I learned how to live and give with objective".

As community champion for the Sydney Relay for Life, taking place Friday at Centre 200 in Sydney, Phillips will be one of the guest speakers.

Preceding the main event is the free Relay For Life of Newtown's Survivor/Caregiver luncheon.
