The biggest increase in suicides was in North Dakota, where the rate jumped more than 57 percent. The Blue Cross Blue Shield report said online activities such as social media, video games and texting, and the isolation that can result, might be contributing, and should be studied.

Preventing suicide requires help from all sectors of society, the researchers said.

'This kind of "perfectionism" not only affects women, but, in light of Spade's suicide, it is something we can highlight, ' she added'. In a subgroup of 27 states, including all six New England states, more than half the suicides in 2015 occurred among people with no known mental health condition.

Aside from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, there are other hotlines and venues available to those who might be suicidal.

Among decedents aged 18 years or older, 20.1% of those without known mental health conditions and 15.3% of those with had served in the United States military.

Shuchat said there are simple steps anyone can take to help someone at risk. Nevada, where according to the CDC, the rate actually decreased-if only by less than 1 percent.

As of 2018, only 10 states mandate suicide prevention training for health professionals.

Celebrity chef and beloved TV personality Anthony Bourdain was found dead on Friday, apparently by suicide, at age 61.

On a personal note, I have to say I agree with most of the findings presented by the CDC and I especially agree with the recommendations about reporting on suicides.

In 1993, the agency supported a study that found that people with guns at home faced a risk of suicide five times greater than those without.
