Val Kilmer reuniting with Tom Cruise for ‘Top Gun 2’

TheWrap reports Val Kilmer is set to reprise his role in the long-awaited Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.

Earlier, Tom Cruise shared a picture from the first day of the shoot which has him gazing at a fighter plane with the text "Feel The Need" embedded on it.

In Top Gun: Maverick, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is back in action as an instructor at the Top Gun training base.

Director Joseph Kosinski is calling the shots for "Top Gun: Maverick" which is being bankrolled by Simpson/Bruckheimer and Skydance Media.

The 58-year-old actor will be joining Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick, according to The Hollywood Reporter. As a hotshot, dedicated, but at times reckless, Maverick grows and learns the value of teamwork. Still no word yet on whether original stars Kelly McGillis, Tom Skerritt, Meg Ryan, Tim Robbins, or Michael Ironside will be included in the cast. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously outlined that the film will deal with the rise of unmanned drones and pilots becoming a thing of the past. Also returning is German composer Harold Faltermeyer, who scored the original film.

Oh, and Kenny Loggins has also come out of nowhere to say he'd love to work with someone on re-inventing "Danger Zone" for the sequel too. In 2015 Kilmer announced that he'd been offered the film, which he accepted without reading the script.

Top Gun: Maverick will hit theatres on July 12 next year.

Top Gun was one of the biggest box office and pop culture landmarks of the 1980s.
