United Nation's Environment Alerts About The Global Plastic Pollution

Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Usman Jibril, made this known on Saturday at a news conference to officially kick-start the activities leading to the commemoration of the World Environment Day on the 5th June 2018. The theme for the June 5 annual observance is an invitation to make changes in everyday life to reduce the heavy burden of plastic pollution on our natural places, our wildlife - and our own health.

An event dedicated to "Beat Plastic Pollution" is buzzing in the streets of Bandra at Mumbai.

By 2050, it is estimated that there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.

UN Environment head Erik Solheim, said: "The assessment shows that action can be painless and profitable - with huge gains for people and the planet that help avert the costly downstream costs of pollution".

Highlighting the menace posed by plastic, he had said that 25,940 tonnes of plastic waste is generated every day in the country with 40 per cent of plastic waste being uncollected, and 60 million tonnes of solid waste is generated in one year.
