Miss America Will No Longer Include Swimsuit Competition

"We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance", said chairwoman of the Miss America board of directors Gretchen Carlson.

"Sure, it's a relatively good thing that in 2018 this organization has realized it's dehumanizing to compare and judge women's bodies in front of a vast, worldwide audience", said Julie Zeilinger, the founder of a feminist blog calledFBomb.

Current Miss America Cara Mund, who was crowned in September previous year, also took to Twitter to comment on the news, writing: "We're changing out of our swimsuits and into a whole new era #byebyebikini".

Miss America is getting a makeover!

Instead of strutting their stuff in a swimsuit or evening gown, hopeful winners will be asked to wear what makes them feel confident, expresses their personal style and shows how they hope to advance the role of Miss America, ABC News reports. There's a big reason.

Late previous year, a number of emails were leaked that showed conversations between the pageant's CEO Sam Haskell and others within the organization, insulting former winners' bodies, slut-shaming them, referring to them with misogynistic slurs, and even conspiring to tank their businesses and deny them their livelihood.

Miss Iowa 2016, Kelly Koch, also commented on the move, saying, "Miss America and Miss State have always been known to be not just talented, smart and articulate but also lovely".

She settled a sexual harassment lawsuit against former Fox News Chairman and CEO, Roger Ailes in 2016.

Social media users, including the reigning Miss America Cara Mund, used the hashtag #ByeByeBikini to show their support for the changes.

Miss Virginia gets a $20,000 scholarship and goes on to compete for Miss America.

'If a woman chooses to be in a bikini pageant, isn't that her choice?' he said.

It's not just the swimsuit segment that's going. What a positive change.

Following the revelations, Carlson became part of an all-female leadership team at Miss America. "That's what we're judging them on now".

In a Facebook video Tuesday, Hagan said she weighed 124 pounds when she was crowned.

"This is a new beginning and change can sometimes be hard, but I know a lot about change", she said. Hopper was Miss Arkansas in 1983. The Miss America & pageant system is outdated.

The elimination of the swimsuit competition will begin at the national competition as some states have already completed selection. Girls train hard for it, that's not something to discourage.

So what will viewers see when they tune into the next Miss America Competition in September?

"We are no longer a pageant".

"Not only have the times changed, but the women of our country have changed", says Waring.

Miss America has undergone a major overhaul in response to the Me Too movement.
