Walking Dead actor Andrew Lincoln reportedly leaving season 9

Andrew Lincoln, star of AMC's "The Walking Dead", will reportedly leave the show after its ninth season, which is now in production.

AMC has yet to confirm if The Walking Dead season 9 - which began filming earlier this month - will serve as Lincoln's final season.

Over the last several seasons, TWD fans have had to cope with major character deaths, including fan favourites Glenn (Steven Yeun), Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Carl (Chandler Riggs). Rick Grimes is one of the most iconic comic book characters in recent memory, which has translated to television.

Given that The Walking Dead is now one of the highest rated shows in its 18-49 demographic, we're sure AMC will be able to foot the bill.

Reports are that Lincoln may not be the only actor from the series that may exit.

Fear the Walking Dead season 4 is now pulling a soft reboot of sorts (doubling down in the soft reboot that was season 3), and it's working out pretty successfully.

Of the seven actors to receive opening credits billing in season one, Lincoln is the only one to remain... for now.

Fans were stunned at the news that Lincoln would be leaving the show and bringing Rick Grimes' story to an end. This may give all of those Grime arcs that were in the comics but not in the show to Reedus's Daryl - a character who was never in the comics but was created for the show. Cohan's contract negotiations with AMC stalled, leading her instead to sign on to the new ABC series Whiskey Cavalier.

Back in February Lincoln hinted at his exit, stating, "there's certainly an endgame in my head". Whether or not the The Walking Dead can survive without Grimes remains to be seen.

The ninth season also marks the first year of a new showrunner for the series in writer and executive producer Angela Kang.

According to the writeup, Lincoln is expect to appear in only six episodes of the next season, after which his character will apparently be gone for good.
