Tesla on Autopilot Crashes into Parked Police Car

This driver is no exception: according to a Reuters report, he told the police the Autopilot was switched on when the auto crashed into the back of the police vehicle.

A Tesla sedan in autopilot mode has crashed into a parked police SUV in Laguna Beach, with the Tesla driver suffering minor injuries.

Sgt. Cota said the crash occurred in the same area where a Tesla rammed into a semi a year ago, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. This isn't just a legal way of covering its back - driverless cars may be safer than human drivers (low bar that this is), but Tesla's features aren't there yet. The police SUV ended up with its two passenger-side wheels on a pavement.

She continued: "I'd estimate that Autopilot classified ~30 per cent of other cars, and 1 per cent of bicyclists".

The police auto was empty at the time but the Tesla driver suffered minor injuries, according to a San Diego Union-Tribune report. The crash happened soon after 11am Tuesday on Laguna Canyon Road.

"Thankfully there was not an officer at the time in the police auto", Cota said.

Whether an Autopilot feature was engaged when a Model S collided with the rear of a stopped fire truck in the USA state of Utah on May 11 remained to be confirmed.

But consumer watchdog groups say Tesla's use of the word "autopilot" in its branding and marketing is misleading.

Tesla has faced public and federal official scrutiny for releasing details and results from the Model X involved in the Mountain View, CA crash in March.

Tesla's semi-autonomous Autopilot mode has been hitting the headlines lately after recent crashes.

A Tesla, seen here, was traveling on autopilot but with a driver when it slammed into a police vehicle Tuesday, May 29. In order to avoid "false positives", the computer is programmed to ignore stationary objects, including vehicles.

In a tweetstorm that could at times be mistaken for the work of a troll who had hijacked his account, Tesla CEO Elon Musk unleashed a stream of criticism at his detractors, mostly in the media, amid.
